One of the severe forms of acne is Nodular acne. Like the other forms of acne, it also occurs from different factors like over production of keratin and sebum, bacteria accumulation in the skin, and also from inflammatory response.

Also known as cystic acne, nodular acne is characterized by nodules and cysts deep in the skin. These nodules and cysts are actually blockages of the sebaceous and oil producing glands. They have actually burst open and produced pus and inflammation in the surrounding skin. As it is a severe form of acne, the nodular acne can cause long term scarring as it occurs deep under the skin and do not show on the surface. Another vital point is that nodular acne heals very slowly. This is because of the fact that the infection waste is not discharged and is left trapped inside the skin.

In most cases, nodular acne can be cleared. But you will need the treatment of a good dermatologist. Fortunately, some methods are there that is used to treat the nodular acne. Using these methods, nodular acne can’t last for a longer time and cause scarring. And such treatments for cystic acne and nodular acne can lead to much higher self esteem and better confidence.

When dermatologist treats a patient, they usually prescribe Accutane or isotretinoin for curing nodular acne. These treatments are actually oral medicines that are usually taken once or twice in a day with meal for 4 -5 months. According to some research conducted, researchers found that isotretinoin has potential to cure nodular acne forever as it decrease the size of sebaceous glands which in result produces lesser sebum. Therefore, the growth of nodular acne causing bacteria is also limited.

However, there are some side effects of isotretinoin that patients using it should be aware of. Some studies have showed that this treatment can cause birth defects in the growing fetus in pregnant women. So, it is worth noting that pregnant woman and those who are planning to get pregnant shouldn’t take isotretinoin at all. And patients going for this treatment should consult the dermatologist on regular basis.

There are also some other treatments for nodular acne, which includes acne surgery, intralesional corticosteroid therapy, and some recent methods. All of them prove their effectiveness, but some extra care needs to be taken. You should consult a dermatologist before you opt for any such nodular treatments.
