Are the rising food prices making it hard for you to stick to your diet and healthy food? Here are a few tips to beat the recession blues and keep you healthy too.

1. Eliminate junk food
Do your food shopping by yourself. This way you avoid junk food , as generally the people demanding more junk food to be picked are your children, and at times spouse. If you shop alone, you buy only the food that you need.

2. Water or milk instead of soft drinks
Enjoy your favorite drinks at a night out, or some sporting event, but avoid having them frequently or in larger quantities. Not only are the drinks laden with calories, they are expensive and unhealthy too. Stick to lower caloried alternatives like milk and water. Milk and milk products, a rich source of calcium, are good for your, as well as your children’s bones and teeth

3. Buy fruits in quantity
Buy seasonal fruits in abundance, and freeze the extras. This way you have something healthy to munch on throughout the year when you are hungry. Wash the extra fruits well, discard any spoilt pieces, dry the fruit, and then freeze in plastic zipper bags.

4. Meats and beans
Meats and beans are unarguably the best sources of proteins. Lean meat is dearer than meats with lots of fat. You can also consume canned beans, as they are cheaper, and also have good protein content.

5. Beans as a substitute
Substitute meats which are more expensive with beans which are cheaper. There are several varieties of beans so you can prepare them in a crock pot, and have them ready when you return from work. The USDA recommends the consumption of beans at least 4 times a week. If you experience flatulence after consuming beans, try washing the beans properly, then covering them with water, boiling the water off, draining the remaining water off, and refilling the pot.

6. If you stay near the coast, or at a place where fishes are available in plenitude, then make them an integral part of your diet. You may try catching the fishes yourself to save money.

7. Use peanut butter, a hot choice with almost everyone who’s embarked on a diet. Instead of having hot dogs, use sandwiches with peanut butter. You do not need to refrigerate peanut butter. Bigger jars can last for several weeks.

8. Devour fruits with high water content. Watermelon, salads, and even
Sugar free gelatin, all have high water content.

As is evident from the diet substitutes listed above, eating healthy doesn’t necessarily have to mean squandering money. You can stay healthy within a budget too, and have the lifestyle and health that you have always coveted.
