Like humans, cats too are affected by acne. “Feline acne” is what people call the acne of cats. It is generally a common disorder of the cats which also forms blackheads or comedones on the lower lip of the cat, face and chin. Acne is onset by the over activity of enlarged sebaceous glands around the cat’s face. These glands are in the influence of hormones and the jaw marking pheromone producers that cats use to mark their region by means of bunting.

Specifically, the facial sebaceous glands of the cat get activated when they rub their face against various household objects i.e, marking. This oily secretion that helps to waterproof a cat’s coat and guard the elasticity of their skin.

However, there are lots of cats whose sebaceous glands overproduce these oily secretions. These oily secretions then produce a greasy layer on the fur of the cat and its skin which results in a feline acne. One can observe feline acne in on pale or white colored cats i.e. a yellow and greasy discoloration on cats. Several studies have shown that in the minor cases of feline acne, the follicles around the mouth and chin may get clogged with a black sebaceous material which results in onset of the blackheads. Later on another secondary infection may come up, i.e. the inflammation of hair follicles and formation of pustules and papules from which pus is excreted. And in the major cases of acne, the area may become inflamed, cystic, swollen or scarred. For example, a symmetrical design of waxy black material may be produced by the affected Persians on the hairs of the chin and face, which indicates severe acne.

There is no age limit for feline acne in cats. It can affect at any stage and trouble the life of the cat. Sometimes severe acne can easily develop and almost gets difficult to get rid of it. For such cases, some treatments were developed for feline acne. Some of them greatly vary in forms. In the general cases of feline acne, using an antibiotic soap, human acne pads or benzyl peroxide can help in clearing the infection. Oral antibiotics are also helpful in some severe cases of feline acne. Some experts also suggest feeding the cat in ceramic or metal dishes and not in plastics. Plastics are thought as the breeding ground of the bacteria. Feline dishes can be limited by washing the dishes on regular basis, and wiping the cats face time to time and after the meal. But still the best way to prevent and get rid of feline acne is to visit a veterinarian when you first see the sign of black spots in the chin. This is a chronic condition and shouldn’t be ignored.

Technically known as acne vulgaris or pimples, cystic acne is a chronic disorder of the skin which is characterized by cysts, closed and open comedones or plugged lesions having a “cottage-cheese” like substance, raised red swelling and pus pockets. Specifically, when the skin pores gets plugged, cystic acne is set. Each pore opens to a canal known as a follicle. Each follicle has an oil gland and a hair. The oil glands have two functions; one is to keep the skin lubricated and the next one is to remove the old cells of the skin. However, when they excrete too much of oil, the pores might get blocked. This then can accumulate debris, dirt and bacteria. The blockage or plug is called a comedone.

Before cystic acne is formed, whiteheads and blackheads starts to develop and they can be visible. When these comedones burst, the substance inside it along with the oil can spread in the surrounding skin area which can again cause inflammatory reaction. This inflammation later on takes the form of cystic when the inflammation is deep in the skin.

Generally cystic acne occurs in face and the shoulders. But, cystic acne can also occur in your legs, arms and buttocks. Some studies have shown that cystic acne generally affects teenagers; however, the adults and infants can also get affected by cystic acne. Even cystic acne can persists in age of 30s and 40s.

There are many different factors that can trigger the formation of cystic acne. One cause is the hormonal changes. It has been found by researchers that the hormonal changes due to menstruation, birth control pills, pregnancy, and stress are major factors causing cystic acne in women. Apart from the hormonal change, using irritating creams, corticosteroid medication and tropical steroid creams can onset the formation of cystic acne. However, a general public notion is nuts and chocolates worsens cystic acne, but interestingly no one could prove the fact. Some experts even claimed that it isn’t true.

There are a various cystic acne treatments that has been designed and developed. These treatments promise to gets rid of cystic acne and prevent its development. Even though they work excellently, visiting the doctor before using any such treatment is worth it. The doctor can understand well about your demands and his suggestion and advices can help you get better results.

A skin disorder that affects almost every person at some point of their life is Acne. Around 90% of world’s population is affected by Acne and mostly teenagers. Like most skin disorder, acne too has forms from mild to severe and is generally characterized by the occurrence of blackheads, pimples, and sometimes acne cyst on the neck, face, chest, and back.

Acne cyst is actually bacterial infection cited deep inside the skin. Unlike blackheads and whiteheads, the acne cyst is usually inflamed lesions that are often filled with pus. A significant amount of local immune response is initiated when the clogged pores leak deep inside the skin. Acne cyst looks like a lump, and the main difference between them and acne cyst is that the cyst is pus-filled. The diameter of an acne cyst is generally 5 mm or a bit more. This may look very simple; however, acne cyst is one of the few signs and symptoms of severe acne that can be painful and cause permanent mark if not treated properly.

You can however, treat and cure acne cyst. Taking good care can prevent acne from occurring. There are a number of ways of fighting acne cyst and its scarring. But among all the best way prevent and treat ace cyst growing and forming is not to squeeze, pinch and pick the lesions as doing this will only increase the infection and cause much pain and inflammation, which will last for longer than if you had left it untouched.

The most common way of treating an acne cyst is with tropical and oral antibiotics, and this prevents acne scarring and combat acne from forming. Sometimes in the case of severe (or moderate) acne cyst, antibiotherapy is generally used as a reliable treatment which helps in eliminating harmful microorganisms such as, propionibacterium spp that colonize the sebaceous follicles in the skin.

Another different approach in treating acne cyst is with particular bacterial resistances against some antibiotics. It is actually a new field that the medical science is using recently. With the introduction of this, many experts have pointed out that the antibiotics and its administration modalities must be tackled so to check the risk of an acne cyst. A perfect example of this kind of treatment is the oral minocyclines because they are quite effective against acne treatments. There are also various other treatments available in the market, but to be wise and get a better result, always see your doctor before you decide to opt one of the treatment.
